Bangladesh has sought Italian investment in its aviation sector, including the development of an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hub, as the two countries explore ways to expand air connectivity and strengthen tourism cooperation.
The issue was discussed at a meeting between Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat and Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday.
The discussions covered aviation investment, aircraft maintenance facilities, increased flights between Dhaka and Rome, and a proposed memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost tourism cooperation.
Bangladesh Biman currently operates six flights a week between Bangladesh and Italy. Responding to Italy’s interest in increasing the number of Dhaka-Rome flights, the minister said the government planned to consider adding flights after new aircraft joined the national carrier’s fleet, taking into account the needs of Bangladeshis living in Europe.
The meeting also explored the potential for Italian investment in an MRO hub in Bangladesh. Italian companies Edge Company, Atitech SpA and Gilardoni were mentioned for their experience and capabilities in the sector.

The two sides also discussed developing Cox’s Bazar Airport to make the country’s tourism destinations more accessible and attractive to international visitors. The possibility of establishing designated “red zones” for foreign tourists to improve their safety, comfort and overall travel experience was also raised.
With the number of Italian tourists visiting Bangladesh reportedly rising, both sides expressed interest in expanding tourism exchanges through improved attractions, connectivity and visitor facilities.
They also expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral cooperation in aviation, investment and tourism, with a proposed MoU expected to provide a framework for closer collaboration.
Italian Deputy Head of Mission Federico Zamparelli was also present at the meeting.
