The Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute (BFTI) on Monday launched a three-day capacity-building training programme on WTO fundamentals, key agreements, domestic trade policies and the Bangladesh Trade Portal (Basic Level, Batch-2).
The programme is being held under the Bangladesh Regional Connectivity Project-1 (BRCP-1), implemented by the Ministry of Commerce and organised by BFTI, according to a press release.
A total of 25 officials from various ministries, divisions, agencies and trade associations are participating in the training. Khadiza Nazneen, additional secretary of the WTO Wing at the Ministry of Commerce, attended the opening ceremony as chief guest. She stressed the importance of such training in enhancing officials’ knowledge and skills in international trade.
She urged participants to attend further training on WTO agreements and rules, pursue self-learning and apply their knowledge in their work.
BFTI Chief Executive Officer Dr Mostafa Abid Khan said understanding the challenges and opportunities in international trade was crucial as Bangladesh prepares to graduate from least developed country (LDC) status. He noted that WTO agreements and rules are directly or indirectly relevant to the work of many government ministries and agencies.
