The government aims to make freshwater fish an export commodity alongside marine fish in the near future, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid said.
“We will succeed in exporting freshwater fish alongside marine fish within the shortest possible time,” he said.
The minister made the remarks at the first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Monday with committee chairman Khairul Kabir Khokon in the chair.
Rashid said the government was working to ensure food and nutritional security while transforming the fisheries, agriculture and livestock sectors into export-oriented industries.
Highlighting the ministry’s importance, he said it had a crucial role in building a healthy and disease-free nation.
The minister called for coordinated efforts based on field-level experience, public needs and future plans, seeking cooperation from all stakeholders.
At the meeting, ministry officials briefed the committee on the organisational structure, manpower, functions and activities of the ministry and its departments and agencies. The committee reviewed the implementation of ongoing projects and recommended measures to complete them as quickly as possible.
It also directed the authorities concerned to submit detailed progress reports on the projects at the committee’s next meeting.
Committee members unanimously agreed to conduct field-level inspections of various departments and agencies under the ministry to assess their activities.
The committee also directed the authorities to take immediate steps to publish recruitment notices to fill vacant posts in the ministry’s departments and agencies.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and committee members Sheikh Md Rezaul Islam, Prof Nazrul Islam, MA Hannan, Ali Azam Md Abu Bakar and Mufti Amir Hamza attended the meeting.
