Indian Assistant High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dr Rajeev Ranjan, has assured enhanced bilateral cooperation to support the development of Bangladesh’s capital market.
He made this assurance during his visit to the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) located in Agrabad, Chattogram, on Sunday.
At a courtesy meeting held on the CSE premises, the exchange’s Chairman AKM Habibur Rahman was present, along with Directors Maj (Retd) Emdadul Islam, Shahzada Mahmud Chowdhury, and Naznin Sultana.
Also in attendance were Managing Director M Saifur Rahman Majumdar and other senior officials.
The information was disclosed in a press release issued by CSE on Monday.
According to the press release, during the meeting, the managing director of CSE presented a strategic plan aimed at developing Bangladesh’s capital market. The plan highlighted opportunities for diversification through joint initiatives with India, the establishment of a commodity-based derivatives market, and the expansion of new asset classes. He also outlined the vision of transforming CSE into a multi-asset class exchange and invited Indian investors and brokers to invest in Bangladesh.
In response, Dr Rajeev stated, “India has extensive experience in capital markets, which it is keen to share with Bangladesh. Through joint technical sessions, specialised workshops, and knowledge transfer programmes, Bangladesh’s financial market can be further strengthened.”
He further noted that the successful experiences of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) could serve as effective models for CSE. In particular, India’s expertise in commodity derivatives could play a vital role in price discovery and risk management in Bangladesh.
Referring to Bangladesh-India relations, he said, “India views Bangladesh not just as a neighbour, but as a development partner.”
He also expressed optimism that both countries will continue to move forward together in the future.
At the end of the programme, the CSE chairman thanked the guest and expressed hope for further strengthening bilateral cooperation in developing Bangladesh’s capital market.
