The Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, on Wednesday stated that the EU is keen to accelerate trade relations with Bangladesh.
He sought the commerce minister’s support in removing non-tariff barriers and emphasised the importance of diversifying Bangladesh’s export products.
He made the call during a meeting with Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir at the Secretariat in the capital.
The EU delegation included the ambassadors of Spain, Denmark, France, Sweden, Italy, and Germany, as well as EU Trade Adviser Abu Sayed Belal.
The meeting discussed various aspects of trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the European Union in detail.
Michael Miller also said that European countries will continue to maintain their partnership with Bangladesh. He called for ensuring a level-playing field in bilateral trade and business.
The commerce minister stated that the European Union is an important trading partner for Bangladesh.
He affirmed that Bangladesh will continue working to further strengthen bilateral trade relations in the future.
Muktadir said, “We want to facilitate business and investment. Over the past three years, the economy remained stagnant and investment inflows were limited. Every year, around two million people enter the workforce in our country. We aim to make Bangladesh more investment-friendly, and you will see progress in the coming days.”
He also called for increased European Union investment in Bangladesh.
Also present at the meeting were State Minister for Commerce Md Shariful Alam; Additional Secretary (Export) of the Ministry of Commerce Md Abdur Rahim Khan; and Additional Secretary (FTA) Ayesha Akter.
