The government will not increase electricity prices in the upcoming fiscal year, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed announced while presenting the proposed national budget for 2025–26 fiscal year on Monday.
Delivering the budget speech in a televised broadcast at 3:00pm, Dr Ahmed highlighted that controlling living costs and ensuring a steady energy supply remain top priorities amid current inflationary pressures. As such, the government has decided to keep electricity tariffs unchanged for the time being.
To ease the financial burden of subsidies in the power sector, the finance adviser said steps are being taken to reduce overall electricity generation costs by 10%. These measures include reviewing existing power purchase agreements and conducting energy audits to identify areas of efficiency.
Furthermore, the government plans to ramp up domestic gas production. By the end of this year, 648 million cubic feet of gas will be supplied from local sources, with an additional 1,500 million cubic feet expected by 2028.
Dr Ahmed stressed that affordable and reliable energy is crucial not only for economic stability but also for improving the standard of living for all citizens.
