The interim government has proposed an allocation of Tk200 crore for research on the blue economy in the national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year, aiming to unlock the vast potential of the country’s marine resources.
Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed made the announcement during a pre-recorded budget speech aired on Monday.
Emphasising the significance of science and technology in driving sustainable development and innovation in the country, the finance adviser said the allocation would support research in the blue economy – particularly in areas such as basic scientific study, the sustainable exploitation of marine resources, and their effective management.
Dr Salehuddin also mentioned the outgoing fiscal year’s special research grants, amounting to Tk16.66 crore, which supported 492 projects across various universities.
The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources to drive economic growth, improve livelihoods, and create jobs, while safeguarding the health of marine ecosystems. It includes key sectors such as fisheries, maritime transport, tourism, and ocean-based renewable energy.
