The Election Commission has been allocated Tk2,956 crore in the proposed national budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed announced the budget allocation on Monday. Of the total amount, Tk2,727 crore has been earmarked for the revenue budget, while Tk229 crore is set aside for development expenditure.
In the previous fiscal year, the Election Commission received Tk1,230 crore, which was later revised down to Tk1,142 crore.
Dr Salehuddin highlighted the interim government’s commitment to restoring democratic processes and ensuring credible elections.
“One of the key objectives of the interim government is to uphold the people’s right to vote through free and fair elections, and to facilitate the transfer of power to a democratically elected government,” he said in his speech.
“Over the past decade and a half, the country’s electoral system has been entirely dismantled. For this reason, we have prioritised reforming the electoral system and have launched initiatives to amend and overhaul various laws, policies, and regulations accordingly.”
The Bangladesh Election Commission has already updated the voter list to ensure the next parliamentary election is conducted fairly.
