BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman stood by the people during every national crisis and disaster despite living abroad for 17 years, overcoming various challenges while in exile, said the party’s acting secretary general, Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

He made the remarks on Sunday after paying tribute and offering prayers at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. The visit was organised to mark the 27th founding anniversary of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF).

Rizvi said the foundation, under Tarique Rahman’s visionary leadership, had expanded its activities beyond the national level to reach people in remote parts of the country.

He said Tarique had regularly provided guidance and ensured humanitarian assistance during national crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic, heavy rainfall, floods and severe winter conditions, despite being abroad.

Rizvi also said the foundation had undertaken various innovative initiatives, including online science exhibitions, to encourage young people and teenagers to pursue science and education during what he described as a difficult period of authoritarian rule.

The organisation has also carried out humanitarian activities, including providing artificial limbs to people who lost mobility in accidents, tree plantation drives and medical assistance to help people return to normal life, he said.

Senior BNP leaders attended the programme, along with ZRF Executive Director Dr Farhad Halim (Donor), Dr Morshed Hasan Khan and prominent physicians, engineers, teachers and senior professionals.
