The Rangpur district unit Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a discussion titled “Youth Unemployment: Causes, Social Impacts and Possible Solutions” on Sunday.
At its monthly general meeting, members of the organisation discussed the causes of unemployment, its social and economic impacts, and possible ways to address the problem.
Present at the meeting were Rangpur district unit Shuvosangho General Secretary Md Rakibul Hasan Rakib, Joint Organising Secretary Md Faiyaz Ahmed Fahim, Social Welfare Secretary Sohag Das, Publicity Secretary Meftahul Islam Labib, and Executive member Nur Habiba and others.
Speakers at the meeting said educated unemployment is a major challenge to the country's development. Every year, a large number of young people complete higher education and seek jobs, but sufficient employment opportunities are not being created for all of them.
In many cases, there is a mismatch between the subjects students study and the skills and qualifications demanded by the job market. As a result, many fail to secure their desired employment despite having academic qualifications, they said.
They also said unemployment affects more than an individual's personal life. Prolonged joblessness increases financial pressure on families and causes frustration and mental distress. In some cases, young people may become vulnerable to crime, drug addiction and other anti-social activities.
Several measures to tackle unemployment were highlighted during the discussion.
These included equipping young people with information technology and technical skills, improving their language and communication abilities, providing training in freelancing and entrepreneurship, supporting small businesses and self-employment, and creating alternative career opportunities alongside conventional jobs.
The discussion also emphasised strengthening coordination between educational institutions and workplaces and creating employment opportunities that match young people's qualifications and skills.
