Members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho in Kurigram have proposed a range of initiatives to address the challenges posed by climate change and improve the living standards of women in char areas.

The initiatives include vocational training, increasing health awareness and creating a conducive environment for women's education.

The proposals were made at a workshop organised by the Kurigram district unit Shuvosangho at Kurigram Collectorate School and College on Sunday.

Speakers at the workshop said communication between char areas and town is often disrupted during floods, leaving women particularly vulnerable as they struggle to access medical care and meet other urgent needs. To address the problem, they proposed arranging for small boats to be made available in char areas.

They also suggested providing sewing and handicraft training to help women in char areas become economically self-reliant, distributing sewing machines and creating opportunities to sell their products.

Besides, they stressed the need for training in farming, crop care and farm management. They also emphasised raising women's health awareness, creating a supportive environment for girls' education and organising courtyard meetings to promote awareness of agriculture and healthcare.

Kurigram district unit Shuvosangho President Harun Or Rashid said initiatives could be taken to distribute winter clothes before winter sets in to reduce the suffering of disadvantaged people in char areas. He proposed distributing sweaters, caps and blankets.

Shuvosangho Organising Secretary Khadija Akter, Literature and Cultural Affairs Secretary Hemlata Roy, Joint Organising Secretary Rifat Hossain Russell, Women and Children Affairs Secretary Brishti Rani Sarker and Publicity Secretary Rubaiya Islam were present.
