The Pabna district unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho provided essential grocery commodities to an ailing former tank-lorry driver on Friday to help him sustain his family and revive his small home-front shop.
The assistance was handed over in the morning to Abdul
Mannan Sheikh, 63, a resident of Dohorpara in Pabna Sadar upazila, who has been
struggling to run his household amidst financial hardship and illness.
Mannan worked as a tank-lorry driver at Kobad Petrol Pump
near Pabna Edward College for decades. However, his livelihood came to an
abrupt halt in 2024 when a fire broke out at Farid Filling Station while he was
unloading fuel. Panic-stricken by the sudden blaze, he suffered a stroke that
left him physically incapacitated and permanently unable to drive.
To make ends meet, he set up a tiny roadside grocery shop outside his residence. Due to a severe lack of working capital and depleted inventory, he could not cater to customer demands, leaving his daily income insufficient.
Learning of his plight, members of the Pabna district unit
of Bashundhara Shuvosangho stepped in with sustainable support. Instead of
one-off food assistance, they delivered a full stock of grocery goods including
rice, lentils, edible oil, soaps, and powdered spices directly to his shop to
keep the venture viable.
Shuvosangho’s Pabna unit Adviser and Kaler Kantho Pabna
Correspondent Prabir Saha, President Mahbubul Alam Faruk, General Secretary
Shafiqul Islam Shanto, Pabna Sadar Upazila Unit President Farhana Akhter, and
local dignitaries attended the distribution.
Faruk stated that standing beside distressed citizens and
creating sustainable livelihoods remain the organisation's primary goal, urging
solvent quarters of society to extend similar humanitarian support to people in
need.
