Bashundhara Shuvosangho's Rowangchhari upazila unit has held an awareness meeting in Wagoi Para of Bandarban's Rowangchhari upazila to raise social awareness against child marriage.
At the meeting, held on Thursday (29 October), speakers called on families and communities to work together to ensure children's right to education and a safe childhood.
They said child marriage forces many adolescent girls to drop out of education at an early age and hampers their physical and mental development. Addressing the problem requires not only enforcement of the law but also greater social awareness and collective efforts, they added.
Shimol Tanchangya, president of the upazila unit, chaired the meeting, while its organising secretary, Monilal Tanchangya, moderated it.
Shimol Tanchangya said relying solely on law enforcement would not be enough. Parents needed to be made aware of the consequences of child marriage, while a social environment discouraging the practice had to be created.
Uy Sing Marma, Chittagong Hill Tracts coordinator and president of the Bandarban district unit, stressed the need to expand educational opportunities for children in remote hill areas and raise awareness among parents.
He also said adolescents should be informed about their rights.
Apon Tanchangya, an adviser to the organisation, said poverty, lack of awareness and social superstitions often drove families towards child marriage.
Expanding education and holding regular discussions with parents were essential to changing the situation, he added.
