A library run by Bashundhara Shuvosangho in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur is drawing people of different ages, fostering a growing interest in reading and creating a space for lively discussions.

Located at Abdur Rashid’s Hat in the Bashkandi area, the library attracts children, teenagers, young people and older residents who come to read books and take part in discussions after finishing their reading.

A visit to the library found readers engrossed in stories and novels, history, science and other subjects. They exchanged views on the books they had read and discussed education, literature, culture and contemporary issues.

The initiative has received a positive response from local residents, despite the growing popularity of mobile phones and social media.

The library houses books by various authors, including more than 200 titles by Imdadul Haq Milan, a fiction writer who heads Bashundhara Shuvosangho and serves as an adviser to Bashundhara Group.

Arfin Mohammad Sajib, information and research secretary of the local branch, said the initiative aimed not merely to provide access to books but also to promote knowledge, intellectual development and creativity among people.

He expressed hope that local participation would help turn the library into a vibrant centre for learning and intellectual exchange.

SM Delwar Hossain, general secretary of the branch, said they wanted to cultivate reading habits among the younger generation through regular reading sessions and various book-centred activities.

He said they hoped the library would foster a positive social environment centred on learning, healthy discussions and intellectual engagement.

Mohammad Habibur Rahman, an adviser to the branch, expressed gratitude to Bashundhara Shuvosangho for establishing the library, saying it had created new opportunities for reading and learning, particularly for young people.

He also expressed hope that such initiatives would continue in the future.

Among others present at the reading session were joint organising secretary Ishrakur Rahman, Alamgir Mia, joint publicity and publication secretary Tanoy Roy, and literature and culture secretary Tamim Ismail.
