Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a discussion meeting in
Amtali, Barguna, to raise farmers’ awareness about proper crop care, increased
agricultural production, and the safe use of pesticides.
Speakers at the meeting said agriculture plays a vital role
in ensuring the country’s economic stability and food security. They emphasised
that farmers need to be aware of proper land management, balanced fertiliser
application, timely irrigation, weed control, and measures to combat pests and
diseases, while avoiding arbitrary pesticide use, to ensure good yields and
maintain crop quality.
They also stressed the importance of adopting modern and
environmentally friendly farming practices.
The speakers further said that when crops are affected by
pests or diseases, farmers must first identify the problem correctly. They
should then use approved pesticides in the prescribed quantities, following the
advice of agricultural officers. Excessive pesticide use can pollute soil,
water, and the environment while harming human health and beneficial insects.
Therefore, it is essential to follow prescribed guidelines when applying
pesticides, use appropriate protective equipment, and observe the recommended
waiting period before harvesting crops.
The speakers noted that improving farmers’ awareness would
positively contribute to safe food production, increased crop yields and
farmers’ financial well-being.
Akkas Talukdar, a local union parishad member, attended the
meeting as a guest. Other attendees included: Maulana Abul Hasan, Habibur
Rahman, Forkan Mridha, and local farmers and distinguished community members.
Al Amin Babu, adviser to the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Amtali Upazila branch, participated in the event on behalf of the organisation, along with members Gazi Nasir, Nazmul Hasan, Naimur Rahman, Sabbir Khan, Sakur, and others.
