Bashundhara Shuvosangho conducted an awareness campaign across Damudya upazila of Shariatpur on Sunday to protect jatka (hilsa fry) and support the preservation of national fishery resources.
Activists carried out outreach activities at key points of
the upazila, distributing informative leaflets among fishermen, fish traders,
and local residents.
The campaign called on people from all walks of life to
refrain from netting, transporting, marketing, and hoarding undersized hilsa during
the conservation period.
Moderated by Damudya Upazila Press Club General Secretary and Kaler Kantho correspondent Syed Mehedi Hasan, the programme was attended by upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad commander Nurul Islam, Shuvosangho’s Damudya upazila unit general secretary Md Tareq Bepari, and upazila unit adviser and headmaster of West Charbhayra Government Primary School Md Abubakar Siddique, and Shuvosangho adviser and principal of Prime Computer and Technical Institute Zakir Hossain.
Dainik Jaijaidin correspondent Kalam Sardar, journalist Abu
Alam, and other unit members were also present.
Addressing the gathering, commander Nurul Islam said:
"Hilsa is our national treasure, and safeguarding this aquatic resource
remains our collective duty. If jatka are given the opportunity to mature,
overall hilsa production will rise substantially, bolstering our fisheries
sector. Everyone must abstain from catching, selling, or buying fry, and mass
awareness among consumers is just as critical as among fishermen."
Campaigners later went door-to-door and visited local fish
markets to hand out leaflets, urging communities to cooperate with government
conservation drives to ensure plentiful hilsa yields.
