Bashundhara Shuvosangho has stepped in to support a financially distressed family in Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh by providing essential food supplies and equipment to start a mobile tea stall, creating an opportunity for the family to earn a living.

The assistance was provided on Saturday, 17 October, under the initiative of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Haluaghat upazila unit. The initiative aims to address the family's immediate food crisis while helping it establish a sustainable source of income.

The family's hardship came to light when two students from Bashundhara Shuvosangho School stopped responding for four consecutive days when asked about their daily meals and other needs ahead of the Durga Puja vacation. RezauI Karim, an adviser to the Haluaghat upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, noticed the unusual silence.

Later, adviser Nafiul Hasan Mubin learned about the family's plight from another student living nearby while visiting the school to check on the students. He found that the family had been surviving on puffed rice and flattened rice for four consecutive days because of severe financial hardship.

The head of the family, Md Rokon, used to work at a tea stall in Uttar Bazar. His daily wages were one of the family's main sources of income. However, the shop owners had kept the stall closed for about a week, leaving him without work and depriving the family of its regular income.

As a result, Rokon struggled to buy food, meet household expenses and arrange other essentials. Borrowing from shopkeepers he knew also failed to cover the family's needs.

After learning about the situation, Bashundhara Shuvosangho took steps to support the family. The local unit informed the organisation's central office, which recommended providing the family with the necessary equipment to start a mobile tea stall as a longer-term solution to its financial difficulties.

Following the recommendation, Nafiul Hasan Mubin and RezauI Karim visited the family's home to assess its circumstances and discuss ways to establish an alternative source of income.

The organisation then handed over the equipment and supplies needed to start the tea business. These included a tea flask, two kilogrammes of sugar, one kilogramme of Ispahani tea leaves, 500 grammes of ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, 12 cakes, six glass cups and 100 disposable cups.

The family also received onions, potatoes, garlic, eggs, a bucket and other essential household items to help meet its immediate needs.

The family members expressed joy and gratitude to Bashundhara Shuvosangho for standing beside them during their difficult time. The support is expected to help Rokon earn a living through his own efforts and gradually overcome the family's financial hardship.

The initiative combines immediate food assistance with a longer-term livelihood opportunity, enabling the family to work towards financial stability rather than depend solely on short-term relief.

Nafiul Hasan Mubin and RezauI Karim, advisers to the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Haluaghat upazila unit, and Farzana Riya, vice-president of the unit, were present during the programme.

The initiative reflects Bashundhara Shuvosangho's commitment to standing beside people in need under its slogan, “Shuvo Kaje Shobar Pashe” (Beside Everyone in Good Deeds).
