A discussion meeting on preventing child marriage was held at Aligaon Abdul Gafur Secondary School in Charfesson upazila of Bhola on Tuesday to raise awareness among students.
Organised by the Charfesson upazila unit of Bashundhara
Shuvosangho, the session highlighted the adverse impacts of underage marriage
on adolescent health, education, and social development.
The school's Headmaster Md Gafur attended as chief guest, while Shuvosangho Charfesson unit Joint Convener Ayesha Ripa presided over the event. Unit members Ahmed Shamim, Mohammad Tuhin, Amena Islam, Ikra Akter, Mohammad Nihad, Rakibul Hasan, and Ikram Efaz were present, among others.
Md Gafur noted that child marriage disrupts natural physical
and mental growth, forcing many girls to drop out prematurely. Speakers
emphasised that legal enforcement must be paired with community awareness to
address underlying causes such as poverty and social insecurity.
Urging students to stay vigilant, Ayesha Ripa called on them
to alert teachers and guardians if any peer is pressured into early marriage,
stressing that youth activism is vital to building a child-marriage-free
society.
