To help students overcome conversational inertia and build confidence in verbal communication, a spoken English seminar and competition was held on the Eden Mohila College campus on Sunday.

Eden Mohila College unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised the event, providing participants with a platform to practise public speaking, sharpen presentation skills, and overcome self-doubt.

Presided over by the unit's President Faria Haque Tajim, the programme was attended by members Iffat Sultana, Mosammat Sahida Khatun, Sayma Jannat, Jyoti Akter Jui, Faria Yasmin Akhi, Runa Khatun, Tahmina Akter, Rukaiya, Jannatul Ferdous Jannat, Arifa Khatun, Fahima Akter Ritu, Alpana Akter, Sumaiya Akter, Rumana Ahmed, Sumaiya Suha, and Ayesha.

A major highlight of the session was the spoken English competition, where students delivered presentations in English to test their fluency before an audience. Rabeya Basri Rokeya, a third-year student of the English department, clinched first place. Arifa Khatun, a second-year student of mathematics, finished as the first runner-up, while Fahima Akter Ritu, a third-year student of statistics, secured third place.

In her remarks, Faria Haque Tajim noted that practical speaking platforms allow learners to shed the fear of making grammatical errors. "Beyond textbook learning, students need regular real-world practice to build coherent presentation and spontaneous expression skills, which are crucial for higher education and career development," she said.

Participating students commended the initiative, noting that regular exposure to such speaking platforms helps identify personal shortcomings and fosters fluency. Organisers reiterated their commitment to hosting similar skill-development programmes across the campus.
