On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child,
Bashundhara Shuvosangho honoured 15 meritorious girl students at Chand Sultana
Secondary Girls' School in Kushtia town on Sunday morning.
The program was attended by Tarikul Haque Tarik, adviser to
the Kushtia District Branch of Bashundhara Shuvosangho and staff correspondent
of Kaler Kantho; Shakil Ahmed, acting president; and Priyata Akter, acting
general secretary; Asma Ansari Miru, president of TIB-run Committee of
Concerned Citizens’ (CCB) Kushtia chapter; Shirina Akter, headmistress of the school;
and teacher Bashir Ahmed.
At the event, Bashundhara Shuvosangho honoured 15
meritorious students, selecting three top-ranking students from each class from
Grade Six to Grade Ten. Each student received gifts of notebooks, pens,
pencils, and a geometry box. The young students were overwhelmed with emotion
upon receiving the honors and gifts and expressed their gratitude to
Bashundhara Shuvosangho.
Speaking at the event, Asma Ansari Miru said that girls are
not merely members of their families or society; they are the “driving force of
the world's future.”
“Today's girls will become tomorrow's teachers, doctors,
scientists, entrepreneurs, and leaders of the country,” Asma Ansari said.
Asma Ansari said that, according to United Nations data, a
child marriage still takes place somewhere in the world every three seconds.
“Child marriage, malnutrition, lack of quality education,
and security challenges continue to undermine the potential of girls around the
world before they have a chance to flourish.”
“We must remember that holding back a girl child means
holding back an entire society and country,” Asma Ansari further said.
