A discussion meeting was held with students in Dharampasha upazila of Sunamganj on the harmful effects of child marriage, online fraud, microplastics and various social and public health issues.

Bashundhara Shuvosangho Dharampasha upazila unit organised the meeting at Janata Model High School in the upazila at 11am on Tuesday.

The speakers described child marriage as a social problem, saying early marriage can disrupt education and expose adolescent girls to various social, economic and health risks.

They called for joint efforts by families, schools and communities to prevent child marriage.

Students were advised to promptly inform teachers, parents or relevant authorities if they or anyone they know is at risk of child marriage.

The speakers also warned students about online fraud, advising them not to share personal information, passwords, one-time passwords or financial details with strangers on social media and other online platforms.

They urged students to verify attractive offers, suspicious links and messages sent in the name of acquaintances before responding to them.

Regarding microplastics, speakers said, “Excessive use of plastic has become a major threat to the environment and public health. Plastic can break down into tiny particles known as microplastics, which can enter the human body through water, soil and the food chain.”

They stressed the need to reduce plastic use and avoid dumping plastic and polythene indiscriminately.

Among others, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Dharampasha upazila unit adviser Abdul Malek Khan, president Selim Ahmed, Janata Model High School assistant teachers ATM Nazmul Haque and Mozammel Haque, organising secretary Imam Hossain, women’s affairs secretary Asma Akter, and education and health affairs secretary of the Haor and River Protection Movement Nazrul Islam attended the meeting.
