Twenty unprivileged women in Nandail of Mymensingh have received sewing machines free of cost as part of an initiative by Bashundhara Shuvosangho, with support from Bashundhara Group, aimed at helping them become self-reliant.

The machines were handed over at a programme held at the Nandail Upazila Parishad Hall Room on 17 September after the women completed a three-month intensive sewing training course organised under the supervision of Bashundhara Shuvosangho.

Renowned writer, Bashundhara Group Adviser and Bashundhara Shuvosangho Chief Imdadul Haq Milan attended the programme as the chief guest.

Nandail Upazila Nirbahi Officer Fatema Jannat, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Md Mozahidul Islam, Nandail Upazila BNP Senior Joint Convener Mizanur Rahman Liton, Joint Convener Babu Pallab Roy, BNP leader Hasnat Mahmud Talha, journalist Enamul Haque Babul, senior local administration officials, community leaders, journalists and representatives of Bashundhara Shuvosangho were also present.

Neshaiba, a Class X student at a local madrasa and daughter of an amra seller, was among those who received a sewing machine.

Her father sells amra, tamarind and other pickles near schools and colleges to support his family of five.

“Now this machine has become a great source of hope for me. I will earn by sewing clothes and help my father support our family. I will also be able to cover my education expenses with my earnings,” Neshaiba said.

She said the sewing machine had given her new hope of becoming self-reliant.

Another recipient, Bushra, daughter of day labourer Abdus Sattar, said financial hardship had nearly forced her to discontinue her studies.

“I knew some sewing work but could not change my situation because I could not afford a sewing machine. Today, Shuvosangho has given me a new lease on life. I will now stand on my own feet and continue my studies,” she said.

The other 18 recipients also come from financially vulnerable backgrounds. Some are widows, some are separated from their husbands, while others come from extremely poor families.

Bashundhara Shuvosangho has been working across the country to help unprivileged women become self-reliant. Under the initiative, the women first receive practical training and then receive sewing machines free of cost as a means of earning a livelihood from home.

Speaking as a special guest, Nandail Upazila BNP Senior Joint Convener Mizanur Rahman Liton said economic empowerment of women was essential for genuine social development.

“Bashundhara Shuvosangho is creating opportunities for unprivileged families to become self-reliant by distributing sewing machines. The initiative will help strengthen the local economy and reduce women’s dependence on others,” he said.

Chief guest Imdadul Haq Milan said temporary relief or financial assistance alone could not eradicate poverty.

“Providing unprivileged people with skills and the tools they need to earn a living is the real path to sustainable development. Bashundhara Shuvosangho is doing exactly that,” he said.

He described the sewing machines as more than just equipment, saying they would help improve the livelihoods of 20 families and promote women’s empowerment.

The trained women said they learned cutting, design and modern sewing techniques during the three-month course. They said they were now capable of making various types of clothing and would be able to earn regularly by sewing clothes for people in their neighbourhoods.

The initiative is expected to reduce financial pressure on their families while enabling the women to contribute to the rural economy.

As the women left the hall carrying their new sewing machines, their faces reflected a sense of satisfaction and renewed confidence. The initiative has opened a new chapter in the lives of women striving to become self-reliant in rural Nandail.
