Bashundhara Group has distributed sewing machines among 20 disadvantaged women in Barhatta upazila of Netrokona after they completed a three-month sewing training programme organised through Bashundhara Shuvosangho.

The sewing machines were handed over at a programme held at the multipurpose hall room of Barhatta upazila on Saturday.

Noted writer and Bashundhara Group Adviser Imdadul Haq Milan attended the event as chief guest and handed over the machines to the recipients.

Speaking at the programme, Imdadul Haq Milan said the main objective of distributing sewing machines was to help women who want to become self-reliant but cannot afford to buy the equipment.

“We want the sewing machine to become a means of becoming self-reliant, rather than simply remaining a machine in a woman’s home,” he said.

He urged the recipients to use the machines to earn an income by sewing clothes for their families as well as people in their neighbourhoods.

“If women can move forward and become self-reliant, Bangladesh will become stronger and more prosperous,” he said.

Barhatta Upazila Nirbahi Officer Selina Akter said the initiative was important for helping disadvantaged women become self-reliant.

She said the three-month training, along with the sewing machines, would provide the women with an opportunity to work from home and contribute to their families’ finances.

Police Inspector (Investigation) Shafiquzzaman praised Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s initiative to support disadvantaged people and help them become self-reliant.

Mahmuda Akter, one of the recipients, said she started working as a cook in bachelor accommodations after losing both her husband and father-in-law, who had supported the family.

“After receiving three months of sewing training through Bashundhara Shuvosangho, I have received a sewing machine today. This machine has given me a new opportunity to rebuild my life. I will now be able to earn some money by sewing clothes from home and hope to provide a better life for my child,” she said.

Shuvosangho Barhatta upazila unit President Azizul Haque Faruk chaired the programme, moderated by its General Secretary Mukhlesur Rahman Hira.

Upazila Social Services Officer ASM Golam Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Shafiquzzaman, Barhatta Press Club President Shamsuddin Akand Babul, Dharmapasha Press Club President Selim Ahmed, among others, attended the event.
