A literary gathering focusing on the works of noted fiction writer Imdadul Haq Milan was held at Jagannath University (JnU) on Monday.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Jagannath
University unit organised the event, titled “Love, Nature and People—Sense of
Life in the Writings of Fiction Writer Imdadul Haq Milan”, to mark the writer’s
birthday.
Students from various departments, members of
Bashundhara Shuvosangho and literature enthusiasts attended the programme.
Participants discussed the diversity of Milan’s literary works, his language and style, characterisation and portrayal of social realities. They also exchanged views on how love, nature, human relationships, rural life and the joys and sorrows of ordinary people feature in his stories and novels.
Student Akash Ahmed Rupom said the lives of
Bangladeshi people and the country’s natural landscape are portrayed naturally
in Imdadul Haq Milan’s works.
Alongside love, separation and relationship struggles, his writings depict the dreams, struggles and everyday realities of rural people, he said.
He also said one of the defining features of Milan’s writing is his ability to portray ordinary people’s emotions in simple and fluent language, making his characters familiar to readers as they reflect the lives and feelings of people around them.
Ratan Hossain, vice-president of the
Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s JnU unit, said Milan had succeeded in building a
distinct readership in Bengali fiction.
“The greatest strength of his writing is his
ability to connect easily with readers,” he said, adding that such programmes
are important for introducing his literary works and diversity of writing to
the younger generation.
Toufiq Hossain, president of the JnU unit,
said rural life, simple human emotions, relationship struggles, love and
separation, the beauty of nature and various social realities have been
portrayed vividly in Imdadul Haq Milan’s writings.
“The characters in his stories and novels are
not people from an imaginary world. Rather, they reflect the joys and sorrows,
dreams, failures, love and struggles of familiar people in society,” he said.
The gathering also featured discussions on
different aspects of Milan’s literary career.
Around 50 members of the Bashundhara
Shuvosangho’s JnU unit, including Vice-President Al Shahriar and members Rinku,
Rohan, Mohon, Suhail and Mukta, along with students from various university
departments, attended the event.
