Group on Saturday handed over sewing machines to 20 underprivileged women in
Alikadam upazila of Bandarban after they completed a three-month sewing
training course, with the aim of helping them become self-reliant.
The
attending guests handed over the sewing machines at an event at the Alikadam
Upazila Hall Room.
One of
the 20 beneficiaries is Shyamoli Tongchonggya, a second-year undergraduate
student at Bandarban Government College. Her father is Kadam Tongchonggya. The
family’s financial condition is so precarious that they somehow manage to make
ends meet on the income of her brother, who works for an NGO. Alongside
continuing her studies, Shyamoli dreams of supporting her family. She believes
that by learning sewing, she will one day be able to contribute to her family’s
expenses with her own income.
Another
beneficiary, Chammum Mro, is a second-year higher secondary student at Alikadam
College. Her father, Rengkai Mro, supports a large family of three sons and
eight daughters through shifting cultivation. When the harvest is good, the
family can manage two meals a day, but a poor season brings greater anxiety.
Despite these difficult circumstances, Chammum continues her studies. She sees
the sewing machine she received as an opportunity to change her family’s
fortunes.
Those
present at the sewing machine distribution ceremony included Alikadam Upazila
Agriculture Officer Md Sohel Rana, former Alikadam Upazila Vice Chairman Md
Riton, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Director Zakaria Zaman, Alikadam Police Station
Sub-Inspector Yamin Ahmed, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Alikadam Upazila branch
advisers Younglok Mro and Nursada Bhuiyan Babu President SM Ziauddin Jewel, General
Secretary Mehedi Hasan Rana, and Kaler Kantho’s Alikadam upazila correspondent
