Dengue awareness programme held in Damudya

Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a discussion and awareness programme in Damudya upazila of Shariatpur on Monday to raise awareness among students about dengue prevention.

The programme was held in a classroom of Kehurvanga Adarsha Girls’ High School in Koneshwar union. Leaders of Shariatpur district unit and Damudya upazila unit Shuvosangho, along with students of the school, participated in the programme.

Speakers at the event discussed ways to protect oneself from dengue infection and measures to prevent the spread of Aedes mosquitoes.

They said there is no alternative to public awareness in preventing dengue, an Aedes mosquito-borne disease. Aedes mosquitoes generally breed in stagnant water, so schools, homes and surrounding areas should be kept clean.

Flower pots, discarded containers, drains and other places where water can accumulate should also be cleaned regularly, they said.

The speakers further said stagnant water around homes or educational institutions should be removed quickly if it remains for a long period.

Advising people to use mosquito nets and take necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites, they also urged people to consult a doctor without delay if symptoms of dengue, such as fever, headache or body aches, appear.

The speakers said preventing dengue is not the responsibility of the administration or any particular organisation alone. Students, teachers and local residents all need to play their respective roles.

Koneshwar Union Parishad Chairman Md Anisur Rahman Bachchu and Union Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer Delwar Hossain attended the programme as guests.

Among others present were Shariatpur district unit Shuvosangho Adviser Shariful Alam Emon, President Mizanur Rahman Molla, Damudya upazila unit advisers Zakir Hossain and Md Abu Bakar Siddique, General Secretary Md Tarek Bepari, Kehurvanga Adarsha Girls’ High School Headteacher Shariat Ullah, acting headteacher of 29 No Kehurvanga Government Primary School Enamul Haq Enam, and Daily Kaler Kantho’s Damudya upazila correspondent Syed Mehedi Hasan.
