Bashundhara Shuvosangho on Saturday inaugurated a sewing training centre in Durgapur upazila of Netrakona to empower underprivileged women through skills development.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the premises of Protibha Coaching Home and Advanced Model School in the municipal town.

The three-month training programme will provide sewing training to 20 widows, poor women and female students.

The event was chaired by Bashundhara Shuvosangho President Md Jamal Talukdar and moderated by General Secretary Al Noman Shanto.

Among the guests were Durgapur Press Club President Tobarak Hossain Khokon, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Adviser SM Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, Vice-President Rajesh Gour, honorary member and founder of Protibha Coaching Home Masum Billah Abhi, sewing trainer Selina Akter, civil society representative Dhanesh Patranobish and Alamin Hawlader.

One of the trainees, a widow, said she had been struggling to support her children since her husband's death. She expressed hope that after completing the training and receiving a sewing machine, she would be able to earn a living, support her family and continue her daughter's education.

Speaking at the event, Tobarak Hossain Khokon praised the initiative, saying it would play an important role in improving the livelihoods of poor women and students in the remote area.

Jamal Talukdar said Bashundhara Shuvosangho has been working to promote entrepreneurship, improve the economic condition of disadvantaged women and support the education of talented students from low-income families.

He added that the sewing training and sewing machine distribution programme would make a meaningful contribution to those efforts and that the organisation would continue such welfare initiatives in the future.
