Bashundhara Shuvosangho hosted a discussion session on reducing drug abuse, and smartphone addiction at the University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS) in the capital on Tuesday.

The chief guest at the event was Prof Md Rashidul Hasan, dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at UITS.

Speakers at the discussion said that drug addiction and smartphone dependency are among the most serious social and psychological challenges facing young people now-a-days. While drug abuse pushes individuals toward self-destruction, excessive smartphone use is severely affecting students’ academic performance, creativity, social interaction, and mental well-being. They emphasized the need for families, educational institutions, and social organizations to work together to keep young people away from these forms of addiction.

Chief guest Prof Md Rashidul Hasan said, “Technology has made human life easier, but its misuse is creating new challenges in society. Many young people are spending excessive amounts of time on social media, online games, and various virtual platforms, causing them to lose interest in real life. As a result, the risks of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems are increasing. Technology should be used as a tool to support life, not as a substitute for it.”

AEM Fahim Hasan, president of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho UITS chapter, said, “Family bonds, moral education, and social awareness play a crucial role in preventing drug addiction. If young people receive proper guidance, a positive environment, and opportunities for healthy cultural activities, they can easily stay away from drugs and other harmful influences.” He also encouraged students to engage in sports, reading, cultural activities, and volunteer work.

During the discussion, students shared their experiences and opinions regarding the harmful effects of drug and smartphone addiction.
