With the slogan “Standing by Everyone in Good Causes,” Bashundhara Shuvosangho's Lama upazila unit has launched a free three-month sewing training programme aimed at empowering poor, underprivileged and marginalised women through income-generating opportunities.

The programme was inaugurated on 5 June at a private educational institution in the Madhujhiri area of Lama municipality, with 20 women, including four from ethnic communities, participating in the training.

Guests at the event expressed gratitude to the country's leading business conglomerate, Bashundhara Group, and its humanitarian wing, Bashundhara Shuvosangho, for organising the free training programme to help women in the hill district become self-reliant.

Speakers said that if the trainees receive sewing machines through Bashundhara Shuvosangho and Bashundhara Group after completing the course, they will be able to earn an income from home.

They added that women's economic empowerment could help reduce domestic violence and family disputes.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Lama upazila unit Shuvosangho President Md Shahidul Islam. The chief guest was journalist Md Kamruzzaman, adviser to the upazila unit Shuvosangho and general secretary of the Lama Press Club.

Among the special guests were Md Tanfizur Rahman, adviser to the upazila unit Shuvosangho and Lama-Alikadam correspondent of Kaler Kantho; Md Shahab Uddin Ritu, correspondent of the Daily Sun; and Md Monirul Islam Tuhin and Majeda Begum, also advisers to the upazila unit.

Reshma Akter, one of the participants, expressed hope that receiving a sewing machine after the training would enable her to contribute to improving her family's financial condition.

Among others present at the event were Lama upazila unit Shuvosangho vice-presidents Yasin Mamun and Md Iran, General Secretary Md Iqbal Hossain, Organising Secretary Md Ilias Uddin, and Office Secretary Shah Rukh Intezan.

The training sessions will be held every Friday and Saturday under the supervision of trainer Minara Begum.
