A vibrant and colourful literary reading circle was held in Bandarban on Friday at the initiative of Bashundhara Shuvosangho.
Aiming to inspire young people to develop an interest in books, cultivate reading habits, and reinvigorate literary practice, the event brought together local youths, students, and literature enthusiasts.
It created a wonderful atmosphere for participants to exchange thoughts on books, author profiles, literary ideas, and their personal reading experiences.
Attending the event as the chief guest, Bandarban University Lecturer Mohammad Wahidur Rahman said, “Literature opens the heart, mind, and consciousness of people. Reading circles are essential for engaging the younger generation in human values and the pursuit of knowledge. Such an initiative by Bashundhara Shuvosangho is timely and commendable.”
Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s hill region coordinator and Bandarban district unit president, Uwei Sing Marma, attended as a special guest.
Expressing concern about the declining reading culture among the youth, he said, “In this age of digital entertainment, young people are losing their reading habits. A literary reading circle can play an effective role in their mental development, enhance creativity, and strengthen their sense of social awareness.”
He further said that Shuvosangho has been regularly carrying out various programmes focused on education, culture, and humanitarian initiatives in the hill region.
Describing the reading circle as a “cooperative of the mind,” the organisation’s organising secretary, Uaong Sing Marma, said, “A reading circle is not just a gathering for reading books; it is a social and intellectual festival. Here, everyone shares what they have learned while also creating opportunities to learn from others. Beyond textbooks, insights about life, values, culture, and experiences all come together to enrich the reading circle.”
Participants in the event took part in reading various literary works, analysing them, exchanging views, and engaging in open discussions. The enthusiasm, participation, and vibrant presence of the young attendees energised the entire programme. At the end of the event, participants were presented with books and literary gifts.
The organisers said they plan to hold larger-scale programmes in the future, focusing on literature, culture, and educational activities.
Bandarban district unit Bashundhara Shuvosangho members Shanti CC, Robin Tangchangya, Shimul Tangchangya, Aung Aung Marma, Swarna Chakma, Nupur Tripura, Moitry Chakma, and Umong Hla Marma were present, among others.
