National Bank PLC, a private lender in financial distress, has received a loan of Tk7,000 crore from state-owned Sonali Bank PLC on 7% interest after a guarantee from Bangladesh Bank
The loan has been provided for a three-month period
on 100% guarantee ensured by the central bank. If National Bank fails to pay
the amount within the stipulated time, the central bank will have to repay the
entire amount to Sonali Bank within three working days, according to the
guarantee.
Asked about the matter, Managing Director of Sonali
Bank Shawkat Ali Khan said, “Sonali Bank has provided liquidity support to
National Bank based on complete guarantee from the central bank, supporting the
initiatives taken by Bangladesh Bank to bring back trust in the banking sector.”
“There is no risk in this financing. The Islami
banks had also received money on BB guarantee earlier,” Shawkat added.
National Bank was one of the top private banks in
the past. Its economic indicators have weakened due to high non-performing
loans. The bank is currently struggling to provide money to its depositors as
per demand due to ongoing losses.
The bank had also received large liquidity support
from the central bank. However, normal transactions have failed to improve yet after
this support.
