A Bangladeshi expatriate was killed in a tragic road accident in Bari, southern Italy, on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Ziaur Rahman, 30.

According to reports published by several Italian media outlets, Ziaur was riding an electric scooter, locally known as a monopattino, when it collided with a bus in the city on 27 October.

Ziaur was reportedly returning home after work when the accident occurred between Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza Massari. His scooter collided with a bus operated by AMTAB, Bari’s public transport company. Ziaur moved to Italy two years ago and worked at a mobile phone shop.

AMTAB authorities expressed condolences following the death of the Bangladeshi national. In a statement, the company’s board conveyed its deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

The company has also launched an internal review in cooperation with police to establish the exact circumstances and cause of the accident. AMTAB said it would cooperate with the investigating authorities.

According to the bus driver and some local residents, the bus was travelling in accordance with traffic rules. They said the driver had activated the indicator while turning right when Ziaur allegedly attempted to overtake the bus and was involved in the collision.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy ATM Rakibul Haque expressed grief over the incident and said the embassy had already contacted the local authorities.

“We have started communicating with the local administration. They have informed us that they are proceeding according to their rules,” he said.

He also said arrangements would be made to send Ziaur’s body to Bangladesh with the assistance of the Bangladeshi community in Italy and the embassy.

Ziaur’s home district is Feni, Bangladesh. His death has cast a pall of grief over his family back home and the Bangladeshi community in Bari.
