The parliamentary standing committee on public undertakings has recommended identifying individuals involved in financial irregularities during the tenure of the previous government and taking necessary legal actions against them.
The recommendation was made at the 8th meeting of
the committee held on Sunday at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The committee Chairman and Chief Whip Nurul Islam
Moni presided over the meeting, while whips Mia Nurudin Ahamed Apu and Md
Akhtaruzzaman Mia, alongside committee members Tahsina Rushdir, Khondokar Abu
Ashfaq, and Mustafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, attended the meeting.
The committee reviewed compliance audit reports on
the accounts of the Chattogram Port Authority for the 2020-21 financial year
and the Mongla Port Authority.
It also examined various pending audit objections
concerning the Chattogram and Mongla port authorities. The objections included
issues requiring recovery, adjustment, write-off, waiver, regularisation and
retrospective approval.
The committee reviewed the audit objections awaiting
final settlement following recommendations from the comptroller and auditor general,
as well as progress in implementing decisions taken at its previous meetings.
Expressing concern over financial irregularities in
the port authorities, the committee also discussed investments of their fixed
deposit receipts (FDRs) in different commercial banks, particularly troubled
and private banks.
The committee expressed strong dissatisfaction over
funds remaining unwithdrawn even after maturity and investments exceeding
prescribed limits in violation of existing policies.
