Officials from the government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) inaugurated the Bara Chhara Flagship Development Subproject under the Small-Scale Water Resources Development Project Phase-2 (SSWRDP-2) in Habiganj on Sunday.
Covering approximately 600 hectares, the subproject
was implemented to improve water conservation and irrigation facilities, JICA
Bangladesh said in a social media post.
Through the construction of a water retention
structure and re-excavation of the Bara Chhara Khal, the subproject has
enhanced water availability for HYV Boro rice and vegetable cultivation.
In addition, several supporting facilities,
including an agribusiness centre, crop warehouse, grain drying yard,
agricultural machinery workshop, farm access roads, and a Water Management
Cooperation Association (WMCA) office, have been established to improve
agricultural productivity, market access, and farmers’ livelihoods.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Takahashi Junko,
chief representative of JICA Bangladesh Office, and Md Belal Hossain, chief engineer
of LGED, together with government officials, WMCA members, farmers, and
community leaders.
This achievement reflects the shared commitment of
LGED, JICA, and local communities toward building a more prosperous, resilient,
and sustainable rural Bangladesh.
