Dhaka Metropolitan Police has urged the public to verify information before sharing allegations against law enforcement agencies on social media.

The appeal follows a Facebook post featuring a photograph of Shreemoyee Rita Rani, alleging that police refused to register her complaint over her alleged assault by a former leader of Swechhasebak Dal in Dhaka’s Mirpur.

In a press release on Saturday, the DMP assured it had examined the allegations, including a claim by a former leader of the banned Chhatra League – SM Zakir – that officers refused to register the case at Mirpur Model Police Station. It said that an initial inquiry by DMP's Mirpur division found no record of any such complaint or case at any of the seven police stations under its jurisdiction.

The press release was signed by DMP Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) Mohammad Akhtar Hossain. It said police had found no information suggesting that a woman named Shreemoyee Rita Rani had visited any police station in Dhaka to lodge a complaint over the alleged assault. The DMP said it was continuing its investigation to verify the photograph and allegations, as well as to establish the woman's identity.

Her exact identity and address have yet to be confirmed, it added. The police urged anyone who knows Shreemoyee Rita Rani or has reliable information about her identity, whereabouts or the alleged incident to contact the Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station or the deputy commissioner of police in Mirpur.

The DMP also reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, maintaining law and order and conducting impartial investigations into all complaints.
