Suspected drug traders allegedly assaulted a member of police, broke his arms and legs and severed a tendon in one of his legs in Rupganj of Narayanganj on Thursday night.
The incident took place in the Uttar Masabo area of Tarabo municipality in the upazila around 11pm.
Abul Kalam, a member of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), had long been protesting against drug-related activities in the Masabo area.
A few days ago, he helped police arrest two alleged drug traders, identified as Shahadat and Emdadul. Following the arrest, Shahadat’s younger brother, Shahjalal, had allegedly been threatening Kalam for several days.
On Thursday night, Shahjalal called Kalam on his mobile phone and lured him to an isolated wetland area.
There, Shahjalal and 10 to 15 others allegedly assaulted Kalam, broke his arms and legs and severed a tendon in one of his legs.
Hearing his screams, local people rushed to the spot, prompting the attackers to flee.
Kalam was rescued and taken first to a local private hospital before being transferred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka.
Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge AHM Salahuddin said he heard about the incident.
“Action will be taken following an investigation if a complaint is filed,” he said.
The victim’s brother, Masud Kamal, said Kalam is a permanent resident of the Masabo area. He was transferred to the APBn unit in Dhaka’s Uttara in April this year. Before that, he was posted in Habiganj.
