Three Bangladeshi migrant workers were killed in a workplace accident in Plaine-des-Papayes, Mauritius, on Wednesday evening, 4 November 2026, reports Mauritius-based Defimedia on Thursday.
The victims were identified as Mohammad Miraz Hossain, 36, Hossain Md Balal, 37, and Sikder Joybayed Islam, 25. All three were employed by an aluminium manufacturing company.
The accident occurred in the early evening at a site where containers were stored. The three workers were crushed under wooden crates measuring eight feet long and six feet wide, which contained several glass panels, each six millimetres thick.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and worked to retrieve the bodies, which were trapped beneath the crates.
Following the incident, the Mauritian Ministry of Labour launched an investigation into the deaths, Labour Minister Reza Uteem announced in a Facebook post.
The minister said the employer would have to pay compensation to the victims' families and arrange for the bodies to be repatriated to Bangladesh, if the families wished.
He also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families.
