Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has called on people to observe 7 November as “National Revolution and Solidarity Day” with due respect and solemnity.
In a statement issued on Thursday, he described 7
November as a significant day in the country's history, saying patriotic
members of the armed forces and ordinary people had taken to the streets
together in 1975 to protect Bangladesh's independence, sovereignty and national
interests.
He said their collective resistance marked the
beginning of a historic chapter in confronting the conspiracies and crises
facing the country at the time.
Referring to the counter-coup on 3 November 1975,
Shafiqur said the country had plunged into instability and uncertainty, but the
united role of patriotic soldiers and the public on 7 November had brought a
new dimension to the situation.
He said the participation of people chanting “Nara-e-Takbir,
Allahu Akbar” had further strengthened their resolve to defend the country's
independence and sovereignty.
Shafiqur said Bangladesh was still facing various
political and national challenges, stressing that national unity was essential
to resist any conspiracy or activities against democracy, independence and
sovereignty.
Learning from past experiences, he said, the country
must resist any attempt to push it back towards fascist rule or
authoritarianism.
He called on patriotic students and citizens,
political parties, the government and the armed forces, along with all
concerned, to play responsible and united roles in safeguarding the country's
independence, sovereignty and democratic progress.
The Jamaat chief also urged all branches of his
party and patriotic students and citizens to observe 7 November with due
respect, upholding national unity, patriotism and democratic values.
