A 22-member parliamentary caucus on migration, rights and development has been formed, with Patuakhali-4 MP ABM Mosharraf Hossain appointed its chairperson.

The caucus aims to strengthen parliamentary efforts to protect the rights of Bangladeshi migrants, ensure safe migration and promote sustainable development.

The Bangladesh Parliamentary Caucus on Migration, Rights and Development was formally announced at a ceremony at The Westin Dhaka on 4 November. The Workers' Rights and Welfare Board (WARBE) Development Foundation will serve as the caucus secretariat.

The newly formed caucus comprises a 10-member executive committee and a 12-member general membership panel, bringing together lawmakers from different political parties.

Four MPs have been appointed vice-chairpersons. Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Khan, MP for Bagerhat-1, is vice-chairperson-1; Mohammad Hasan Rajib Pradhan, MP for Lalmonirhat-1, is vice-chairperson-2; Advocate Fahima Nasrin, from reserved women's seat-29, is vice-chairperson-3; and Bilkis Islam, from reserved women's seat-7, is vice-chairperson-4.

Two women MPs have been given key responsibilities. Mahmudah Habiba, from reserved women's seat-13, will serve as secretary general, while Nayab Yusuf Chowdhury, MP for Faridpur-3, has been appointed treasurer.

The executive committee also includes Mohammad Sadiq Riaz, MP for Dinajpur-2; Syed Jahangir Alam, MP for Dinajpur-3; and Nadia Pathan Papon, from reserved women's seat-32.

The 12-member general membership panel includes Saeed Uddin Ahmed Hanzala, MP for Madaripur-1, representing Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis; Shawkat Ara Akter Urmi, from reserved women's seat-33; Mohammad Abdul Mohit Talukdar, MP for Bogura-3; Salina Sultana, from reserved women's seat-35; and Sanjida Yasmin, from reserved women's seat-31.

Other members are Amirul Islam Khan Alim, MP for Sirajganj-5; Anisur Rahman Khokon, MP for Madaripur-3; Mohammad Ainul Haque, MP for Sirajganj-3; Dr Atikur Rahman Mujahid, MP for Kurigram-2, representing the National Citizen Party (NCP); Fahmida Haque, from reserved women's seat-18; Nusrat Tabassum Jyoti, from reserved seat-350, representing the NCP; and Momtaz Alo, from reserved women's seat-28.

Those involved in the initiative said the caucus would play an effective role in Parliament on issues including the rights of Bangladeshi workers abroad, protection of migrant workers, prevention of human trafficking, and the formulation of migration-related laws and policies.

The inclusion of MPs from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis and the NCP has made the platform more inclusive, they said.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad attended the announcement ceremony as the chief guest. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal was present as a special guest, while Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed and Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment State Minister Nurul Haque attended as guests of honour.

Syed Saiful Haque, chairperson of the WARBE Development Foundation, was also present.

Among others expressing solidarity with the initiative were Foreign Service Academy Rector Ambassador Nahida Sobhan, Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro, Swiss Embassy Deputy Head of Mission Deepak Elmer, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Bangladesh Chief of Mission Laura Tomm-Bonde, International Labour Organisation (ILO) Bangladesh Country Director Max Tunon, British Deputy High Commissioner James Goldman and The Asia Foundation Country Representative Kazi Faisal Bin Seraj.
