The government will provide all possible support for installing solar panels on residential, institutional and industrial buildings, based on their capacity and feasibility, Prime Minister's Adviser and Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin said on Wednesday.
He said the government would conduct
feasibility studies to identify as many suitable buildings and industrial facilities
as possible for rooftop solar installations.
Mahdi Amin made the remarks at a seminar
titled “Leading by Example: Scaling Rooftop Solar in Public Sector” at the
Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital, as part of Solar
Expo Bangladesh 2026.
He said the government's specific targets for solar power were not a sudden initiative, recalling that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had repeatedly emphasised the importance of prioritising solar energy to achieve self-reliance in the country's energy and power sectors when he was in opposition.
The prime minister had stressed that solar power should receive priority to strengthen national capacity, Mahdi Amin said, adding that the vision was now being reflected in national policies following the government's assumption of office.
He also said the prime minister had installed
solar panels on the roof of his own residence as a personal example of his commitment
to renewable energy.
Recalling the BNP government's previous
tenure more than two decades ago, Mahdi Amin said it had taken several policy
initiatives to promote environmentally friendly energy, even when solar power
was not widely popular worldwide.
Describing energy diversification as a key
government priority, he said the administration was giving special importance
to renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources.
Alongside electricity generation from waste, the government was seeking to harness Bangladesh's considerable solar power potential, making the ongoing expo a timely initiative, he added.
He stressed that expanding solar power required coordinated efforts from all government agencies and said the Ministry of Education could play an important role in raising awareness and developing skills among young people.
Solar power expansion in educational
institutions
Mahdi Amin said the government had undertaken
a major initiative to expand solar power facilities across more than 100,000
educational institutions, including primary, secondary, higher secondary,
technical and madrasa institutions, as well as universities.
Within the next six months, suitable rooftops
and unused open spaces at these institutions would be identified and brought
under solar power coverage, he said.
He said conducting feasibility studies to
assess the infrastructure and potential of educational institutions was the
first step in determining where solar power installations would be viable.
Necessary instructions had already been sent
to the relevant institutions through the Ministry of Education, while the
process of identifying suitable institutions was progressing quickly, he added.
