Dafadar, Mahalladar designations renamed Gram Police Chief, Gram Police

The government has renamed the designations of two categories of members of the Gram Police Force under Union Parishads, replacing 'Dafadar' with 'Gram Police Chief' and 'Mahalladar' with 'Gram Police'.

The Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives issued a notification in this regard on Monday.

According to the notification, the government has amended the Local Government (Union Parishad) Gram Police Force Rules, 2015, concerning the force's structure, training, discipline and terms of service, exercising its powers under Section 96 of the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act, 2009.

Under the amended rules, the designation 'Gram Police Chief' will replace 'Dafadar' wherever it appears in the existing rules, while 'Gram Police' will replace 'Mahalladar'.

The amendment came into effect immediately, the notification added.
