A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Motahar Hossain, known as a
close associate of banned Awami League’s leader Bahauddin Nasim, on a four-day
remand in a murder case linked to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman passed the order,
State Prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid confirmed.
He said the accused was produced before the court with a
10-day remand petition. The prosecution argued in favour of the remand, while
the defence pleaded for its cancellation. After hearing both sides, the court
granted a four-day remand.
Earlier, the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested
Motahar Hossain from a residence in the Vatara area of the capital at around
9:00pm on Monday.
The prosecution also identified him as an accused in the
triple murder case in Mouchak-Malibagh.
According to the police application, Motahar is a named
accused in the case filed with Uttara West Police Station over the killing of
Md Jasim during an attack on anti-government protests in Uttara on 5 August
2024.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Saiful Islam of
Uttara West Police Station, produced him before the court and sought a 10-day
remand for interrogation.
In the remand application, police claimed that the
preliminary investigation had found that Motahar had provided financial support
to thwart the student-public uprising in 2024.
The investigating officer sought his remand to uncover the
circumstances surrounding the killing, identify other accomplices and
absconding armed accused, and recover the firearm allegedly used in the murder.
