Police have sought a fresh seven-day remand for Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dwip, a suspect in the murder case over the death of former Air Force officer Tahsif Sauri, alleging that he avoided several questions and remained silent during his previous four-day remand.
The latest remand application was submitted on Tuesday (November 3) by Firoz Uddin, investigation officer of the case and inspector of the Tongi River Police Outpost. A hearing on the application is scheduled to be held at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in the afternoon.
State counsel Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the development.
According to the remand application, Dwip told investigators that he called Tahsif out of his home at around 3:00pm on October 27. The two later visited different places with another suspect in the case, Jerika Tasnim Disha, 19, before she returned home.
At around 12:40am on October 28, Tahsif and Dwip reached the Fish Basti area of Tongi. While walking through Bazar Basti towards a field beside the Turag River, they spotted several people and went their separate ways, the application said.
The application also stated that Dwip had provided some important information about the incident during questioning, but investigators were keeping the details confidential while verifying them in the interest of the investigation.
Investigators said Tahsif, Dwip and Disha had been seen visiting different places and eating at restaurants before the incident. According to information gathered so far, Tahsif was last seen with Dwip and Disha before his death.
Police said they needed to examine and analyse various CCTV footage collected with Dwip to establish the sequence of events.
Investigators also want to determine whom Dwip contacted after leaving Tahsif for 15 to 20 minutes while they were at Nest Bar and Restaurant.
The remand application cited eight grounds for further questioning, including collecting and analysing the call detail records (CDRs) of Tahsif, Dwip and other people concerned, establishing the actual motive behind the murder, identifying the crime scene, recovering evidence and identifying and arresting others involved in the killing.
On October 31, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate granted police four days to question Dwip in custody. Disha was also placed on a four-day remand on November 1 in the same case.
Tahsif went missing after leaving home on the evening of October 27 in response to a call from his junior friend Dwip. His body was recovered by River Police from the Rajabari Ghat area of the Turag River the following afternoon.
Following his death, Tahsif's father, KM Enayetul Karim, filed a murder case against unidentified people at Uttarkhan Police Station in the capital at 1:05am on October 30. Police later showed Dip arrested as a suspect in the case.
