The government believes attempts to create instability in Bangladesh could continue as long as ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina remains alive, and is prepared to thwart such efforts, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.

He made the remarks at a press conference on the progress of government activities in response to a question about whether the unrest was intended to facilitate Hasina’s return in December.

“This is not about December. We believe such attempts may continue as long as she is alive, and we will resist them,” he said.

Zahed alleged that although the Awami League lacked the capacity to become politically active, it might use its financial resources to sponsor sabotage and unrest.

He also alleged that violence during garment workers’ protests was not the behaviour of genuine workers, citing possible involvement of external elements.

On labour unrest, he said the government had formed a new wage board ahead of schedule, considering inflation and rising living costs.

He said the government wanted police to use force only lawfully and proportionately, adding that it would not allow law enforcement agencies to return to the practices of Hasina’s tenure.
