Separate clashes broke out between garment workers and police in Ashulia on Tuesday morning as workers staged a protest in the Narsinghpur area.

The clashes took place in the Narsinghpur area along the Abdullahpur-Baipail road from around 8:00am on 3 November.

Police fired tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse the protesters, while workers retaliated by throwing bricks and stones at law enforcers. Water cannons were kept on standby at key points to tackle the situation.

According to police and local sources, workers from several garment factories in Jamgora, Narsinghpur and Nishchintapur started gathering in front of the main gate of Sharmin Group after 8:00am. Workers from several nearby factories also joined them.

At one stage, the protesters blocked the road and set fire to plastic materials at the site of the elevated expressway project.

When police attempted to disperse the demonstrators, a chase and counter-chase ensued, further escalating tensions in the area.

Abu Taleb, a sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station, said workers had been throwing bricks and stones since the morning. Police later dispersed the protesters.

Meanwhile, the clashes temporarily disrupted traffic on the Abdullahpur-Baipail road, causing panic among local residents and pedestrians.

Additional police, industrial police and joint forces personnel were deployed at several key intersections across the industrial zone to bring the situation under control.
