Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has expressed deep concern and protested heavily against the price adjustment of 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, which has been raised by Tk223 to Tk2,060.
In a statement issued on Monday, Porwar said, “The
abnormal price hike of LPG will create new suffering in the public life.
Increasing the prices of 12kg LPG cylinders by Tk223 within just one month will
further increase the family expenses of the general public. Bearing the
expenses will particularly become tough for poor and middle class families.”
“LPG cylinders are being sold in the market at
inflated rates for a long time. There are allegations of selling a 12kg LPG
cylinder between Tk2,200 and Tk2,300 in the capital. The government is failing
to ensure effecting market monitoring and accountability. Putting the burden of
extra expenses on the consumers with the excuses for increasing commissions by
importers, dealers and retailers is totally unacceptable,” Porwar added.
Porwar further said, “The responsibility of the
government’s failure in mismanagement of the energy sector and controlling the market
cannot be forced on the common people. Increasing energy prices repeatedly
without considering peoples’ purchasing power does not indicate towards a
responsible government.”
In the statement, Porwar strongly demanded from the
government to ensure the sales of LPG at official prices and backtrack from the
decision of a price hike. He also asked the government to take effective steps to
prevent unreasonable profiteering by syndicates and carry out regular market
monitoring to protect the interests of the consumers.
