A Dhaka court on Monday ordered that former lawmaker and banned Awami League leader BM Mozammel Haque be shown arrested in a case filed over an attempted murder during the July uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ehsanul Islam passed the order after hearing an application from the case's investigation officer, State Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid said.

On 27 October, Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman of Bhatara Police Station, also the investigation officer, submitted the application seeking to show Mozammel arrested in the case.

Mozammel was produced before the court from jail on Monday. Public Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid supported the application, while defence lawyer Liton Mia and several other lawyers opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court granted the application.

The investigation officer's application said preliminary investigations had found evidence linking Mozammel to the incident. It alleged that he had worked with other accused and senior Awami League leaders to suppress the quota reform movement.

According to the case statement, Shamim Mia took part in a protest on 19 July 2024 on 100 Feet Road under Bhatara Police Station. He sustained bullet injuries in four parts of his body and later filed an attempted murder case naming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 295 others.

Mozammel was arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Niketan on 5 October last year. He has been in jail since then.
