Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday held a meeting with readymade garment (RMG) factory owners to discuss workers’ protests and work stoppages demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.

The meeting was held at the Secretariat in the morning, with the ongoing labour unrest in the garment sector on the agenda.

Garment workers have been staging protests for several days, pressing for higher wages. In response to their demands, the government has already formed a new minimum wage board.

On Sunday (1 November), a six-member wage board was constituted, headed by a judge, to review and determine the minimum wages for garment workers.

Later in the evening, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a meeting with ministers and advisers concerned, including those in charge of home and labour affairs, to discuss the situation and the workers’ demands.
