A Dhaka court on Sunday rejected the bail plea of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam in the case filed over the death of his second wife, Mariam Akter.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir
rejected the bail petition, said State Prosecutor Azizul Haque Didar.
On Sunday, defence lawyers, including Mahbubur
Rahman and Mizanur Rahman, filed bail petitions which the prosecution opposed.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the bail plea.
In the bail petition, the defence stated that the
accused was completely innocent and had no involvement whatsoever in the
incident mentioned in the first information report (FIR). He had been
implicated in the case solely to harass him with malicious intent.
The petition further stated that the 75-year-old
senior politician and freedom fighter was suffering from a serious heart
condition. It also mentioned that he had a permanent address and would neither
go into hiding nor leave the area if granted bail.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court also
denied his bail petition in the case.
On the evening of 20 September, Mariam's body was
recovered from a flat at NAM Bhaban in the capital, hanging. Later that night,
police took Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda, into custody.
Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case that
night accusing Gazi Nazrul Islam, his wife Maksuda Islam and the deceased's
maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman, of abetting suicide.
The following day, the court granted a four-day
remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and a one-day remand for Maksuda Begum. Later that
night, the investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch of Dhaka
Metropolitan Police.
On 22 September, Maksuda Begum was sent to jail
after a one-day remand in the case. Another accused, Obaidur Rahman, who was
arrested in the case on 23 September, was also sent to jail by the court on the
same day.
The court, however, placed Gazi Nazrul Islam on a
fresh four-day remand in the case on 24 September. He was later sent to jail
after the end of his second round of remand.
