A police vehicle was set on fire allegedly by protesting garment workers in the capital’s Pallabi area on Sunday.

The incident took place in front of the Purabi Cinema Hall Road at around 12:00pm, amid ongoing demonstrations by garment workers demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.

Witnesses said the police vehicle was on fire around 12:15pm, while protesting workers were seen standing beside it.

When a Fire Service vehicle arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze, protesters chased it away. Police then fired three sound grenades to disperse the workers.

Earlier, at around 9:30am, the workers blocked roads in the Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-11 bus stand areas as part of their movement demanding higher wages.

Anwar Islam Dolon, an official of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters' media cell, said a team from Pallabi Fire Station had been dispatched to the spot following reports of the incident.

However, he said he could not confirm whether the vehicle was a police vehicle.
